The Natural Flow

Exploring breath, voice and spirit through song A May Bank Holiday Three Day Singing Workshop

29.04.2016. - 02.05.2016

Michael Harper is an international countertenor, singing teacher and workshop facilitator. He is returning to Hill Cottage Retreat Centre with the ‘Natural Flow’ which will provide another opportunity for singers to take part in this exceptional workshop. This is a chance to work closely with Michael, over a period of three days to develop and enrich vocal technique and range

Michael brings a body mindfulness based approach using movement, exercises and gentle relaxation techniques to achieve free breathing and to uncover the range and expression within our voices. He will work with songs he grew up with from the African-American tradition, as well as material he thinks will enable the group to develop vocal potential. There will also be space for small group and individual tutorials to help us find the ‘flow’ or ‘spirit’ that can enrich our vocal interpretation of sound and song.
This workshop stands on its own as well as forming the first part of a longer, more in depth, five day workshop with Michael planned for October
“My aim is to discover and expose each person’s abilities to find the song in themselves whether it be opera, Lieder, folk song, soul, blues, jazz or any other style. There is a natural flow that is present in everyone.” www.michael-harper.net

Stillness, Movement & Expression

A Five Day In-depth Singing Retreat – 25-30 October 2016

25.10.2016. - 30.10.2016

Michael Harper – Stillness, Movement & Expression
Michael Harper20162

A Five Day In-depth Singing Retreat – 25-30 October 2016

“But I want to move – I need to move to sing!” Is often heard from the singer who has not yet understood the importance of stillness in singing. Just think – the simplest change in the expression on your face can change the use, the colour, and the tone of your voice.

This workshop is intended to help singers create free and intended expression in singing, using a combination of gross and fine motor skills. It is an opportunity to work closely with Michael for an extended period to achieve freer expression in singing.

The group will spend time on stabilising the body by exploring control and freedom in movement and then focus on the importance of stillness in singing. Simple songs will be used to uncover how the voice is used and how to liberate it, through gentle releases, within the body. Each singer will have one-to-one time with Michael in the group during the workshop.

Some Comments from Michael’s previous three day workshop The Natural Flow at Hill Cottage (May 2015)

“On one level, it was just marvellous to hear Michael’s voice; on another, he skilfully took me, through song and body awareness, to a new place, a deeper place and, with great humour and love. It was hard work and fun and at the same time instructive and moving. The space we worked in proved a perfect setting to support our individual journeys.” Jan Norton

“What a triumph! There aren’t any words for it all, but it wouldn’t have been the same without every single detail; the people, Michael’s laugh and his wonderful smile, the room – and the rugs – and the cold windy sunshine, the food of course, and the voices – most of all the voices.” Hilary Shepherd

“Such a nurturing and glorious weekend…….. a sense of coming together and building trust and connection and finding the songs, the harmony, the awe, soul-beauty and generosity of Michael’s sharing and his singing….. such a gift.” Lucy Bronwin

PORTRAIT OF A LIFE (OR MANY): ART SONGS FROM THE AFRICAN DIASPORA

Songs by ground-breaking African American and Black British composers exploring the role of music and poetry in the search for life and love in an unfair and unbalanced system.

12.10.2018.

Americana '18
Nadine Benjamin
SOPRANO
Michael Harper
SPEAKER
Nigel Foster
PIANO

Even before the turn of the 20th century, there were African Americans and Black British composers creating art song from African, European and other influences. During the 1920s, the Harlem Renaissance brought a burgeoning of a new generation of writers, artists, and composers projecting a self-determined voice into the world in which they lived and the lives that they inhabited.

This recital explores the art songs by African American and Black British composers and poets. It considers the works of some of the composers influenced by the history of the African Slave Trade and the insurrections against it, the Harlem Renaissance, and the movements for Civil Rights and equality – including Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, William Grant Still, and Undine Smith Moore, and British composers, Dominique Le Gendre, Shirley Thompson, Errollyn Wallen. Their songs reveal a multitudinous approach to composition and employ both ancient and contemporary texts. These composers and poets have mined the rich seams of African, European and other influences and reflect through their song a portrait of a life (or many) in the African diaspora. They have left us with a legacy of song that deserves a place in the canon of classical song literature.

Songs by ground-breaking African American and Black British composers including Florence Price, Margaret Bonds, H.Leslie Adams, Nailah Nombeko, Brittney Elizabeth Boykin, Errollyn Wallen, Shirley Thompson, Dominique Le Gendre, and William Grant Still, with words by Derek Walcottt, William Blake, Edna St Vincent Millay, the poets of the Harlem Renaissance including Langston Hughes and those influenced by it - Nikki Giovanni, Robert Hayden, Mari Evans, Maya Angelou, and Mary Moore Easter — giving a vivid picture of the fight for human dignity and the important role that music and poetry played in the struggle for civil rights and the creation of a rich and sometimes joyous life in black communities of the African diaspora. Breath, Body and Voice – A Five Day Holistic Singing Retreat

30.10.2018. - 04.11.2018

This singing retreat is the third five day event Michael has run at Hill Cottage. It is intended to help singers create more freedom and authenticity in singing. Michael has devised an approach based on a combination of breathing techniques to free the mind of anxiety, exercises to realign the body in order to use the breath more effectively for singing, as well as both traditional and innovative vocal training methods. It is an opportunity to work closely with Michael for an extended period to achieve freer expression in singing.

“My aim is to discover and expose each person’s abilities to find the song in themselves whether it be opera, Lieder, folk song, soul, blues, jazz or any other style. There is a natural flow that is present in everyone.”

The group will focus on the breath, then spend time on stabilising the body by revisiting static posture and freedom in movement, to uncover how the voice is used and how to work with the body to liberate it. Michael will also teach some songs from his extensive repertoire.

Each singer will have a one-to-one session with Michael within the group . This benefits both the individual and group who continue to learn via these short masterclasses. It is useful to bring a couple of simple song to work on during these sessions. Support pairs are encouraged to meet each day to discuss the general teaching and how to act on the individual advice that Michael gives.

Five days together can create a sense of community. Sharing meals and informal singing time in the evenings offers another important dimension to the retreat. The feedback from participants reflects the progress that everyone makes, as well as the impetus to continue developing their voices, as a result of concentrated time spent with Michael.

The Stonewall riots, centring on the Stonewall Inn in New York, are seen as the catalyst for the fight for LGBT rights worldwide. The concert will feature readings of eyewitness accounts from people who took part in the riots, giving a vivid impression of the events of the summer of 1969. There will be songs by William Bolcom, Christopher Berg, Chris DeBlasio, Margaret Bonds, Lee.Hoiby and others. The concert will feature two exciting world premieres. One is a song cycle, commissioned by The London Song Festival, called And Another Song Comes On, which was inspired by the pop songs on the jukebox at the Stonewall Inn in June 1969. The music is by Ben Moore, one of America’s most prominent contemporary composers, known for his tuneful and lyrical style, whose works have been commissioned and premiered by the Marilyn Horne Foundation, Palm Beach Opera, the Glimmerglass Festival, and whose songs have been sung and recorded by Deborah Voigt, Susan Graham, Nathan Gunn, Frederica von Stade, Lawrence Brownlee and others. The lyrics and concept are by Pulitzer Prize and Grammy Award winner Mark Campbell, who has written 32 opera librettos including Stonewall, recently produced by New York City Opera, with music by Iain Bell. This concert will also a performance of a new song by Anthony Green, composer, performance artist and gay rights activist, on the subject of Marsha P Johnson and Silvia Rivera, both activists and drag queens who played a prominent role in the Stonewall riots.
